First Tweet After Elon Musk's Twitter Layoff: 'If the company loses, you have no choice 2022

The new head of Twitter, Elon Musk, has defended his decision to lay off almost 50% of the company's workforce. The billionaire claimed the company was losing money as several advertisers suspended ad spending on Twitter.

Volkswagen, General Motors, Pfizer and United Airlines are the main brands that have suspended advertising on Twitter. Companies are under increasing pressure to decide whether to continue using Twitter after Musk took over the company last week and introduced sweeping changes, including content moderation.

Shortly before taking over the social media business last week, Musk promised advertisers that he would not allow Twitter to become a "free-for-all hell," a sign that people who break its rules about violence or misinformation related to Covid will bear the consequences. .

Musk has also blamed the losses on a coalition of civil rights groups that has been pressing Twitter's top advertisers to take action if he did not protect content moderation. The groups said on Friday they are escalating their pressure and demanding brands pull their Twitter ads globally.

Yesterday Musk tweeted, "Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists.

Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America".

And later, Twitter Inc laid off almost half of 7,500 of its staff, alerting employees of their job status by email.

On Saturday, Musk posted his first tweet since being fired. The tech mogul said he had no choice because the social media site was losing more than $4 million a day.

He added that the dismissed workers had 3 months of leave.

"When it comes to Twitter layoffs, unfortunately, when a company loses more than $

million a day, there is no choice.

All departing employees receive 3 months severance, which is 50% more than required by law, Musk tweeted.

employees working in machine learning engineering, communications, product, content management and ethics were affected by the layoffs.

Shannon Raj Singh, Twitter's acting human rights officer, tweeted on Friday that the company's entire human rights team had been fired. Platform employee

said Twitter's curation team, which was tasked with "highlighting and contextualizing the best events and stories happening on Twitter," has been fired. The company's communications team in India has also been laid off, according to Twitter Asia officials.

teams focused on how Twitter uses algorithms, a priority for Musk, have also been phased out, Reuters reports.

CEOs, including vice president of engineering Arnaud Weber, also said goodbye to Twitter on Friday: "Twitter still has a lot of potential to unlock, but I'm proud of what we've accomplished," he tweeted. road

Twitter last week fired executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal, and fired the company's board of directors while Musk was at the helm of the company.
